Victorian Schools Music Festival (VSMF)
The Victorian Schools Music Festival has so far proved to be a resounding success, with our students delivering incredible performances and receiving well-deserved recognition. We have a number of ensembles still preparing for this great event.
VSMF Junior Choir
On Wednesday 6 August, our Junior Choir took the stage at the Box Hill Salvation Army Centre. The students sang two pieces for adjudication, showcasing their hard work and remarkable progress this year. They were awarded the Bronze award and received valuable feedback to help them continue to grow as performers. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and stage presence.
VSMF String Ensembles
On Monday 23 August, our Phoenix Strings ensemble made their historic debut at the VSMF. As the first Junior String Ensemble from our school to ever participate, their performance at Hawthorn Town Hall was truly admirable, earning them an overall judgment of “Excellent”.
The success continued on Tuesday 12 August with the Presto Strings and Chamber Strings both delivering beautiful performances. The Presto Strings were awarded a Silver award, while the Chamber Strings received the prestigious Platinum award—a special honour given to only a few outstanding ensembles. This is a testament to their dedication and talent.
A huge congratulations to all the students and staff who were involved in these competitions. We are incredibly proud of our musicians and can’t wait to showcase in our Gala Concert in Week 1 of Term 4.

Monash Youth Festival
Our Junior and Senior Guitar Ensembles recently delivered an outstanding performance at the 2025 Monash Youth Music Festival, guided by the expertise of Mr Lee Jones, the guitar teacher at MWSC. The event, held at The Salvation Army Temple in Glen Waverley, brought together talented young musicians from local schools.
The Junior Ensemble gave a well prepared performance of ‘People Get Ready’ and ‘Pinball Wizard’, securing third place in the large ensemble category (under 14s). Our Senior Ensemble performed impressive arrangements of ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ and ‘Africa‘, learning them a well-deserved second place in their category (under 18s).
This festival was a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their skills, hear from other ensembles, and receive valuable feedback from the adjudicators. Well done to all involved!

Lunchtime Concert
While our students love performing at festivals and eisteddfods, it’s also wonderful to share their talents right here with the MWSC community.
On Friday 22 August, the senior music centre hosted a fantastic lunchtime concert featuring our Jazz Combo and Soul Band. The event drew a large and enthusiastic crowd, including many of our Japanese exchange students, making it a truly special occasion. Both groups delivered upbeat and well-prepared performances that everyone enjoyed.
We look forward to bringing these outdoor lunchtime concerts back as the weather gets warmer.
