Owa Senior High School Visit

Our sister school relationship between Minami Senior High School in Osaka, Japan and Mount Waverley Secondary College in Melbourne, Australia began 37 years ago.

In 1988 the College Principal Mr Don Laird and Japanese teacher Ms Megan McLaughlin looked to establish a sister school relationship with a school in Japan to enhance our Japanese language program. At that time Mount Waverley Secondary College was one of the pioneer schools teaching Japanese in Victoria.

Every second year since the program began, staff have brought their two Intensive English classes to Australia. The following year Mount Waverley Secondary College has sent a student Study Tour to Japan. During this tour, a week was spent at Minami Senior High School and was timed for our students to take part in the Bunkasai Festival.

Hundreds of students from both schools have participated in this outstanding exchange program. Not only has cultural understanding and respect for diversity grown through these experiences but more importantly life-long friendships have developed.

In 2022, because of the declining birth rate in Osaka City, Minami Senior High School was amalgamated with two other schools in Osaka to form Owa Senior High School. Last week we welcomed the second tour group from Owa Senior High School who stayed with us for six nights.

Their Principal Mrs Aiko Tanaka and English teacher Mrs Yayoi Matsushita accompanied the group, and all students and staff were hosted by members of our learning community. These international visits are so important and help us learn about each other’s cultures and customs and we will look forward to many years of continued friendship and partnership with Owa Senior High School.

I would like to thank Ms Catherine Henderson for overseeing this visit and a special thank you to our host families for the warm way in which they accepted our visitors into their homes.

VCE Leadership Awards

One of our college Wellbeing Captains Tasmiya H has been shortlisted for the ‘2025 VCE Leader of the Year’. Only eight leaders from across the state are chosen by VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority) each year. This is an amazing achievement, and the award ceremony will be held at the end of this term. Thank you to Mr Tom Grant, Head of Student Voice for his work in supporting our student leaders.

On Friday 29 August the college celebrated ‘Wear it Purple’ day. It was great to see students and staff wearing purple to celebrate diversity and inclusion. Well done to the Wellbeing Team and students on both campuses who helped organise lunchtime celebration activities.

Student Parent Teacher Conferences

A reminder that Semester 2 Student Parent Teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday 11 September between 1pm and 7.30pm.  Conferences will once again be held online via Webex links.  Thursday 11 September is a student free day, and no classes will be held.  Please encourage your child/ren to attend these conferences with you, so that they can receive feedback and take ownership of their learning.

2025 Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey

Our school is conducting the annual Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey offered by the Department of Education and is seeking your feedback. The survey is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, and student engagement. The survey is optional, but we encourage and appreciate your participation.

Our school will use the survey results to assist in identifying areas for improvement and professional development needs in the school, to target school planning and improvement strategies.

The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey will be open online from Monday 18 August to Friday 19 September 2025. All parents / caregivers / guardians have been selected to participate in this year’s survey.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones.

The online survey will be available in English and 10 other languages including Arabic, Greek, Hakha Chin, Hindi, Japanese, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Somali, Turkish, and Vietnamese. Resources are also available in additional languages to assist parents / caregivers / guardians who speak a language other than English at home. Please contact the school for survey guides in your language.

Message from Our Nurses

Just a friendly reminder of what the protocol is for when your child is feeling unwell and would like to go home. Should your child fall ill during the day, they must attend the First Aid Office on their respective campus for care. The Nurse will then assess them and if they are deemed too unwell to be at school, you will be contacted by the Nurse to arrange for them to be collected. If your child is under 16 years of age they will need to be physically picked up and signed out from school, they are not to leave the school grounds without being picked up by an adult.

Students should not be using any form of electronic device (mobile, laptop etc.) to contact their own parents/carers to arrange to be collected. If this occurs, we request your support to direct them to the Nurse.

We would also ask for your cooperation in not sending your child to school if they are unwell. Please do not give them medication to reduce fever and symptoms of viral illness before school in the hope that they can ‘push through’ the day. This will assist us in reducing the spread of illnesses at school and help your child recover and to feel their best whilst learning.

Please also note that a medical certificate will be required if your child does not attend a scheduled VCE SAC.

Your support in this matter would be greatly appreciated as we are trying to keep our learning community safe and stop the spread of Whooping Cough, Covid and other illnesses.

The David Burgess Foundation Scholarships

The David Burgess Scholarship Foundation (DBSF) has been supporting exceptional, resilient young people from Victorian government secondary schools since 1991. In that time, they have awarded scholarships to nearly 80 outstanding students who have overcome significant adversity and gone on to succeed in tertiary education and life.

Established in memory of David Burgess MBE – a passionate advocate for youth, education, and public service – our Foundation is well known across the Victorian education community for its long-standing commitment to helping those who need it most.

The DBSF offers scholarships to Year 12 students from state secondary schools who have suffered adversity and yet shown determination, character, and commitment to their community, and who have the potential to thrive with the right support. Each scholarship provides $7,000 per year (indexed) for the duration of a tertiary course at a Victorian university or TAFE.

What sets our program apart is the mentoring provided alongside financial assistance. Each awardee is paired with two volunteer mentors who offer guidance and encouragement throughout their studies, helping them transition from school to tertiary life.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted via the SmartyGrants platform, administered by Equity Trustees: https://equitytrustees.smartygrants.com.au/Burgess

Applications for 2025 scholarships open 26 August 2025 and close 31 October 2025.

The 2025 Victorian State Schools Spectacular

The 2025 Victorian State Schools Spectacular brings together government school communities from across Victoria to produce a 3-hour live show including music, dance, circus arts, puppetry, and skating. This year’s show will be performed for an audience of about 12,000 people at John Cain Arena on Saturday 13 September, over 2 shows at 1 pm and 6:30 pm. Talented Victorian students will feature on stage, while many other students will work behind the scenes, gaining unique, on-the-job, professional experience.

This year we have 2 students involved. Ananya H of Year 12 is once again a Principal Vocalist and Prosper W will be a member of the orchestra. We wish them all the best in their endeavours!

For a fun, family entertainment experience, and to cheer on students from the audience, be quick to secure tickets through Ticketek.

Adult tickets cost $40; children aged under 15, $20; and concession, $30.  Buy 10 tickets and get one adult ticket free (the 11th ticket is free) by calling Group Bookings on 1300 364 001.

As we approach the end of Term 3, students have been engaged in a wide range of activities both inside and outside the classroom. Many are also beginning to make important decisions about their learning pathways for next year.

Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday 11 September. These conferences provide a valuable opportunity for students and parents to meet with teachers, reflect on progress, and identify areas of focus to support continued growth in Term 4. They also strengthen the important partnership between students, parents, and teachers in supporting learning success.

The German Study Tour

The German Study Tour is about to leave with a group of 14 students from Year 9, 10 and 11 German classes and 2 staff.  Students and staff will travel through Germany including visiting our sister school in Darmstadt.  This is fantastic learning opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the language and culture of Germany.  Thank you to Ms Mary-Jane Boughen and Ms Jo Rogers for their planning and preparation of this 27-day study tour.

Year 9 Brainstorm Productions

Our Year 9 students experienced a performance discussing emotional regulation and cyber safety last week.  Thanks to the Wellbeing Team for organising well supported by Middle School and our supervising teachers.

Year 10 Wellbeing Day

Looking after our mental fitness (wellbeing) is just as important as maintaining our physical fitness. The Year 10 Wellbeing Day gave students the chance to take part in a variety of engaging activities, including Virtual Reality experiences and an Escape Room challenge. Students also participated in a presentation and workshop from Rockit, centred on the theme of young people creating a kinder world. A big thank you to our Wellbeing Team for organising the day, and to the Middle School team and teachers for their support in making it such a success.

Year 10 Gala

The Year 10 Gala is wonderful celebration for our students. They get dressed in their best outfits, capture countless photos, and dance all night! It’s also great to see several staff joining in the evening’s festivities. A big thank you to Mr Aayush Khosla for leading the organisation assisted by Ms Stephanie Xing for making this memorable event possible.

The Term 3 holidays are fast approaching and our Unit 3 and 4 students are nearing the end of their school based assessment tasks for their studies. We are aware this can be a stressful time for students and encourage them to seek support from their Year Level Coordinators, Wellbeing Team, their peers and parents/carers. Habits that will support students at this time are making sure they are getting quality sleep, sticking to a study schedule, using their support network and moving their body.

Lately our Senior Students have had a lot of opportunities to engage in learning outside of the classroom. This included our Unit 4 Outdoor Educational Studies class attending their 5-day Winter Camp, Unit 2 Psychology students heading to ArtVo, and the VCE VM class attending the Trades Hall to learn about workplace rights as well as interviewing the Mayor of Monash. Thanks to all our staff who put their time and energy into organising these experiences for our students.

Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences

Bookings for Term 3 conferences opened on Thursday 28 August. These conferences provide a valuable avenue for feedback regarding your student’s progress this semester. It is a good opportunity to discuss suggested strategies moving forward, and for the teacher, parent and student to develop a shared understanding about how their learning growth can be supported moving forward. Booking will close on Monday 8 September.

Year 11 Fancy Dress

Next Friday 5 September around 200 Year 11s will enjoy a night in the Novotel Ballroom for the annual Year 11 Fancy Dress. We are looking forward to seeing some innovative and imaginative costumes and getting into the spirit of the evening with the students. Thanks to Mr James Johnston for all the organisation leading up to this event.

Unit 3 & 4 English Trial Exam

On Monday 15 September, students studying Units 3 and 4 English will complete a trial exam. This is an opportunity for them to experience the full 3 hours of writing, and 15 minutes reading time required when completing the English exam. The exam will be marked by external assessors allowing students to receive valuable feedback on their progress. It is being conducted at this time to allow students to work through the feedback provided with their teacher upon their return from holidays. We hope students make the most of this valuable opportunity.

Staff Professional Learning Week

In Terms 2 and 3, a week is dedicated to allowing staff access to internally run professional learning sessions that align with our school priorities. These sessions are run by our Learning Specialists, Leading Teachers, and other experienced teachers. For Term 3 the professional learning sessions focused on Cognitive Load Theory and Explicit Teaching. Our staff participated in sessions that enabled them to focus on improving an area of their practice related to the broad theme. Providing time for our teachers to engage in professional learning is key to ensuring our staff are equipped to meet the evolving needs of students.

Victorian Schools Music Festival (VSMF)

The Victorian Schools Music Festival has so far proved to be a resounding success, with our students delivering incredible performances and receiving well-deserved recognition. We have a number of ensembles still preparing for this great event.

VSMF Junior Choir

On Wednesday 6 August, our Junior Choir took the stage at the Box Hill Salvation Army Centre. The students sang two pieces for adjudication, showcasing their hard work and remarkable progress this year. They were awarded the Bronze award and received valuable feedback to help them continue to grow as performers. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and stage presence.

VSMF String Ensembles

On Monday 23 August, our Phoenix Strings ensemble made their historic debut at the VSMF. As the first Junior String Ensemble from our school to ever participate, their performance at Hawthorn Town Hall was truly admirable, earning them an overall judgment of “Excellent”.

The success continued on Tuesday 12 August with the Presto Strings and Chamber Strings both delivering beautiful performances. The Presto Strings were awarded a Silver award, while the Chamber Strings received the prestigious Platinum award—a special honour given to only a few outstanding ensembles. This is a testament to their dedication and talent.

A huge congratulations to all the students and staff who were involved in these competitions. We are incredibly proud of our musicians and can’t wait to showcase in our Gala Concert in Week 1 of Term 4.

Phoenix Strings at VSMF

Monash Youth Festival

Our Junior and Senior Guitar Ensembles recently delivered an outstanding performance at the 2025 Monash Youth Music Festival, guided by the expertise of Mr Lee Jones, the guitar teacher at MWSC. The event, held at The Salvation Army Temple in Glen Waverley, brought together talented young musicians from local schools.

The Junior Ensemble gave a well prepared performance of ‘People Get Ready’ and ‘Pinball Wizard’, securing third place in the large ensemble category (under 14s). Our Senior Ensemble performed impressive arrangements of ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ and ‘Africa‘, learning them a well-deserved second place in their category (under 18s).

This festival was a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their skills, hear from other ensembles, and receive valuable feedback from the adjudicators. Well done to all involved!

Senior Guitar Ensemble

Lunchtime Concert

While our students love performing at festivals and eisteddfods, it’s also wonderful to share their talents right here with the MWSC community.

On Friday 22 August, the senior music centre hosted a fantastic lunchtime concert featuring our Jazz Combo and Soul Band. The event drew a large and enthusiastic crowd, including many of our Japanese exchange students, making it a truly special occasion. Both groups delivered upbeat and well-prepared performances that everyone enjoyed.

We look forward to bringing these outdoor lunchtime concerts back as the weather gets warmer.

Hydration

As the weather is started to heat up is important to remind your student to stay hydrated! Water is essential for our bodies to function. Without enough water we can get tired, our mental function decreases making it harder to learn and it also affects our mood.

To help your child and the environment please make sure your child brings a refillable water bottle to school, and drinks at least two bottles of water across the day. There are bottle refill stations on each campus.

Spring Allergy and Asthma Information

Allergy season has started early this year, so watch out for symptoms of allergic rhinitis (commonly called ‘hay fever’) or asthma. Asthma Australia has a great resource, the Asthma Australia Spring Asthma Checklist, which is really helpful, and we have also provided information and tips for you below. At this time of the year, it is a good idea to:

  • Make sure your supplies of antihistamine medications or asthma preventer and reliever medications (inhalers or dry powder medications, also called ‘puffers’) haven’t expired or run out. Visit your pharmacy to buy more supplies if so.
  • If you usually have seasonal allergy symptoms, plan to take allergy medications in the morning to prevent these occurring.
  • Start taking your asthma preventer medication/inhaler each day if you usually have seasonal asthma symptoms.
  • Clean your asthma inhaler device (instructions here), and your spacers (instructions here, clean weekly and consider replacing yearly if used constantly) – don’t forget to check in all your bags (school, sports, swimming, personal) for any extra devices and spacers to clean!
  • Monitor pollen counts and weather forecasts via the Melbourne Pollen website or app so that you can make a plan for days with high pollen counts or with a high risk of a thunderstorm asthma event.
  • Check in with your doctor or with the free Asthma Australia Educator Service for an update, Asthma Educators can answer your asthma questions. You can Book a FREE phone callat a time that works for you or call direct on 1800ASTHMA (1800 278 462). If you have a current Asthma Action Plan, book an appointment with your doctor for during the September Term 3 school holidays to have a new Asthma Action Plan for 2026 (required yearly) completed to supply that to us in Term 4.
  • If you have worsening symptoms of seasonal allergy or asthma, always make an appointment with your doctor for a check-up.

Venue: Junior School Library
Dates: 9 September and 16 September

Year 9 Work Experience 2026

Earlier this month, we shared information with Year 9 families about the Work Experience Program for 2026. This valuable program allows students to explore careers and gain workplace experience. While it may seem a long way off, many organisations require up to 12 months’ notice, so now is the ideal time to begin planning.

We encourage families to start exploring options early to help students secure placements. If you or your workplace can support our students by offering a placement, please contact the Careers Team. Work Experience is made possible thanks to the support of our community.

Parent Teacher Interviews

To support our students with their pathway aspirations the Careers Team will be available to meet with students and parents who wish to discuss subject prerequisites for tertiary studies, VET, post secondary school plans and subject selection.

Year 12 Career Interviews

Are you considering university, TAFE, apprenticeships, gap year, or entering the workforce, we’re here to support you in planning the next steps. Students are encouraged to book a careers appointment.

As always, the Careers Team is here to help, reach out if you have questions or need guidance.

‘Split Earth’ – The Musical

Print Page Print All Pages
Read Time: ( words)

It’s safe to say production this year was definitely out of the ordinary.

Our incredibly creative writers and directors, Ms Kerr and Mr Weekes, had the lightbulb idea to ‘go against the grain’ and concoct their very own musical, with all music made by them and choreography by Ms Ferguson. At first, we have to admit, everyone was a tad sceptical about how we were going to pull this off, but as soon as casting was through and everyone fell perfectly into their roles, it was like the spark of a great fire being lit.

Split Earth, a sci-fi rock musical, is a story of rebellion, robots, and rebirth. Ultimately, it’s the story of two sisters on a mission to reunite their planet, and whilst the script was adapted many times, songs amended and uplifted, choreo revised and improved, the end product was undoubtedly worth it. The sheer amount of effort and hard work and long hours put in by crew, cast, and directors only served to make it as amazing as it was.

The experience of being in cast, being part of that production family, is something I’ll always treasure, and I’m thrilled to have Split Earth be my first Mount Waverley Secondary College musical. The friends I’ve made and the bonds I’ve created are truly out of this world.

Those who bought tickets to see the show were not disappointed at all- those I’ve spoken to readily agree that the musical was dazzling, with superb acting, dancing and singing- the songs being particularly popular as some have even asked for the soundtrack to be released on Spotify for them to stream! Sorry, folks!

Our two leads, Esther and Celia, received bucketloads of deserving praise for their absolutely phenomenal portrayal of Nyx and Aurora, and all of the cast’s exceptional performances.

Split Earth has since come a long way from its charcoal beginnings, and I’m truly honoured to say that it is one heck of a Wondrous Creation.
