Term 2 – Welcome back

I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. I am excited to have started my twelfth year of service as your College Principal at Mount Waverley Secondary College this term. It is inspiring for me to be part of a learning community where teachers, parents/carers and students are passionate about doing their best and join as a supportive team to unite in a spirit of cooperation and success.

Junior Landcare Grant Planting Project

On Wednesday 22 April, the Sustainability Warriors and student leaders from across the Senior Campus participated in the planting phase of our Junior Landcare Grant. Students planted a range of big, small and medium sized Australian natives to green the area and create a habitat corridor for local wildlife. Thank you to Jimmy B our 2025 College Captain and Enara W who were instrumental in applying for this grant and all the students and staff involved in planting on this day.

Mount Waverley Secondary College’s Exemplary Sporting Program

We are very proud of our many sporting teams who represent our college admirably during competition against other schools.  People regularly comment on our students’ excellent behaviour and good sportsmanship. Our sports program is going from strength to strength, and this is a tribute to our families who encourage in their children a love of sport and doing their best. Congratulations to all our students who participate in our college sports, district sports, zone finals and state finals, we are proud of the high participation rate of our students in sport.

I would also like to thank Mr Jay Newport and Mr Danny Gwynne, our Sports Coordinators, who oversee sporting programs across the college, and all of the staff who give up their time to coach and run practice sessions for sporting teams.

State Swimming Success

On Thursday 23 April our champions of the pool headed off to MSAC to participate in the State Championships. It was another successful day, with our college scoring some excellent results.

Our Senior Girls 4x50m Freestyle relay team made up of Aleisha C, Jayda C, Kira D and Camryn R placed 5th in a highly competitive race. Aleisha and Camryn, along with Olivia T and Hannah R of Year 11, represented our school in the 4x50m Medley relay. The girls were phenomenal, placing 3rd in the 17-20 years race. Congratulations to all who competed on the day, we are so proud of your achievements.

Thank you to Mr Jay Newport and Mr Danny Gwynne for accompanying our students on the day.

ANZAC Sub School Assemblies

On Friday 24 April we held three sub school assemblies to recognise the importance of ANZAC Day. Our Junior Campus Captains Zahan B and Audrey D and College Captains Nicholas L, Tejasvi S, Jayda C and Jasmine K were our MCs for the assemblies and did a great job. I spoke to the students about the history of the day and two of our senior students who are Airforce cadets, Lucy G and Methvin K shared their reflections.

Major Sean Darbyshire, from the Joint Logistics Command of the Australian Defence Force was our special guest, and Sean gave an address about how the ANZAC spirit is relevant to everyday life. Sean also read the Ode of Remembrance and then Tai N of Year 12 and Kiki P of Year 9 played the ‘Last Post’ and ‘The Rouse’ on the trumpet as we observed a minute’s silence.

ANZAC Day is a day for all Australians, regardless of religion, racial background, or place of birth. It is a day to commemorate the bravery and self-sacrifice of past and present generations of Australians, so that Australia can be a place of freedom for all. Lest we forget.

VCE and Careers Expo 2026

230 of our Year 11 students attended the VCE and Careers Expo at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre on Friday 1 May. This excursion supported our students in seeking information about their post school plans. There were many tertiary providers including TAFES and Universities along with employers including the police, defence force, apprenticeship groups for our students to talk to. The programme also provided information for students to complete their career action plans. Thank you to all the students and staff who attended on the day.

Uniform Changeover Time

Just a reminder that all students should now be wearing winter uniform, which includes wearing the college tie. Please ensure that your students have the correct college uniform which is supplied by PSW. PSW is located at 342 -350 Springvale Road, Glen Waverley (behind Officeworks).

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CESF)

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) helps eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

Stay well this winter

Influenza (flu) can be serious, especially for children.  Choose to protect yourself and your loved ones with an annual flu vaccine. The earlier you and your family get vaccinated, the better your protection heading into winter.

Keeping our school community well

We encourage parents and carers and students to:

  • wash or sanitise your hands thoroughly and regularly, particularly before and after touching your face
  • cough or sneeze into your elbow
  • stay home if unwell and consult your GP or Nurse-on-Call as needed
  • stay up to date with your flu vaccinations.

Flu vaccinations

Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and older.
Some people are more at risk of severe illness from flu, especially babies and toddlers. They can get a free vaccination as part of the National Immunisation Program.
You can book a flu vaccine through your GP or pharmacy, or find a flu vaccine near you.

RSV vaccinations for mothers and babies

RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a common virus that causes colds and ear infections. In babies, it can cause severe illness like bronchiolitis.

The RSV vaccine is available for pregnant women as part of the National Immunisation Program. In Victoria, eligible babies can also get the RSV vaccine until Wednesday 30 September 2026.  You can speak with your GP or midwife about the vaccine.

Preparing for Examinations

At this time of year our students are diligently studying for their outcomes and exams.  It has been pleasing to see students studying in the library and VCE Centre, attending Homework Club, catching up with teachers for additional support and attending revision classes to ensure they are thoroughly prepared for their exams.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish each student all the best for their exams.  I am sure they will be rewarded with results that reflect the hard work that has been undertaken throughout the first semester.  Our learning community is proud of the way our students approach their learning, whether it be academic studies, learning a musical instrument, mastering a drama performance, or representing our college in one of our many leadership programs.  Our students and teachers approach all activities with great enthusiasm, matching this with hard work and knowing they will achieve success by giving their best.

Exam Dates 2026

Year 9:  Monday 1 June –Friday 5 June
Year 10 & 11:  Monday 1 June– Friday 5 June and Tuesday 9 June – Thursday 11 June
General Achievement Test (GAT):  Tuesday 16 June

Year 10 Work Experience

All year 10 students are expected to complete a week of Work Experience during the last week of term from Monday 22 June -Friday 26 June. If students need help finding a placement, they should look for guidance on our college website as there are over 400 employers listed there.  For easy access to Careers Corner students can click on the link below. https://sites.google.com/mwsc.vic.edu.au/careers/middle-school/work-experience or make an appointment with our Careers team which comprises our Careers Manager Mr Phil Newnham and our Careers Education and Alumni Coordinator Mrs Victoria Tortopidis.

Work Experience is an opportunity to give our students:

  • an understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers.
  • an opportunity to explore possible career options.
  • increased self-understanding, maturity, independence, and self-confidence
  • increased motivation to continue study and/or undertake further training.
  • a better understanding of how the school curriculum can help prepare young people for work.
  • an introduction to workplace recruitment practices.
  • enhanced opportunities for part-time and casual employment.
  • the opportunity to include the employer’s work experience evaluation in future job and course applications.
  • opportunities to develop work-related competencies and acquire skills.
  • the chance to ‘try out’ a workplace.

ANZAC Assembly

Last Friday we held our annual ANZAC Day Assembly at the Junior Campus. Each year we take this opportunity to reflect upon how fortunate we are to live in this place and time, and have the opportunity to live and learn peacefully. The Year 7 and 8 students heard from Lucy (Year 11) about her own relationship with ANZAC Day via her participation in Cadets. We also heard from Major Sean Darbyshire, from the Australian Defence Force (and a local resident). He spoke about the significance of ANZAC Day, and our local connection, through Sir John Monash.

I would like to thank the students for their calm and reflective manner throughout this assembly.

Upcoming this term

Term 2 is a busy time at the Junior Campus. These are just some of the events and activities on the horizon:

  • Toolbox Education (Year 8)
  • English Incursion (Year 8)
  • Immunisations (Year 7)
  • Term 2 Round Robin sports (Years 7 & 8)
  • My Career Action Plans (Year 8)
  • Scott Darlow Presentation (Years 7 & 8)
  • Humanities First Nations Incursion (Year 7)
  • Monash Tech School (Year 7)

We are so fortunate to have so many different events and activities on for our students throughout the year. We encourage all students to engage, challenge themselves, and seek to get the most out of the opportunities on offer.

Every Day Counts

Did you know:

  • Patterns of late arrival at school or missing classes are early warning signs of disengagement?
  • Missing one day of school each week adds up to two months per year?
  • Each day of absence has an impact on skill development and important social connections
  • Poor attendance may be associated with future unemployment, criminal activity, substance abuse, and poorer health and life expectancy?

Top tips:

  • We want to work in partnership with parents – act early if you have any concerns by contacting your child’s school and asking for advice and support
  • Remember that every day counts
  • There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes and their social connectedness
  • Talk positively about school and the importance of attending every day
  • Open and prompt communication with the school about all absences is a good idea
  • Avoid making routine medical and dental appointments during the school day or planning family holidays during the term
  • Seek help from the school if you are concerned about your child’s attendance and wellbeing. We want to work in partnership with parents to support student attendance and wellbeing.

Welcome back to Term 2

Welcome back to all students, parents, and carers for Term 2!

This is always a high-energy period for the Middle School, packed with sports, excursions and production rehearsals to name just a few of the many and varied activities at the college.

Our Year 9 students are preparing for their first set of core subject exams, followed closely by the Explore Program. Meanwhile, our Year 10 students will also tackle exams before heading off for a week of Work Experience to close out the term. Finally, semester reports will be issued, providing a valuable roadmap for student progress and future learning goals.

Honouring Those Who Served

ANZAC Commemoration assemblies were held on both campuses on Friday 24 April, providing a meaningful opportunity to honour and respect all those who have served our country.

Remembrance matters because history shapes who we are – and reminds us of the values we carry forward. Major Sean Darbyshire offered a moving reflection on the ANZACs.  College Principal Mrs Karen Wade spoke with great insight about the enduring meaning of the ANZAC spirit. It was also wonderful to hear students share their own reflections, demonstrating a genuine understanding of the significance of this day.  The playing of the Last Post and Rouse by students further added to these assemblies.

The assemblies were confidently led by our student leaders – a proud reminder of the leadership qualities we nurture in our school community. A sincere thank you to  Mr Tom Grant for organising the assemblies across both campuses, and to all staff who attended and supported the occasion.

“At the going down of the sun and in the morning — We will remember them.”  Lest we forget.

Key projects included the installation of two Gaga pits at the Junior Campus, an upgrade of the JC Food Technology room with induction cooktops and new ovens and improvements to the Senior Campus Hall. The hall works involved installing new volleyball posts, as well as resurfacing and relining the floor to better support our PE programs.

Thanks to Mano for delivering these majors projects.

Welcome back to Term 2.  It was fantastic to see our Year 11s and 12s return from school holidays refreshed and ready to go. I hope the parent/teacher/student conferences at the end of Term 1 provided useful feedback and information moving forward

Albert Einstein once remarked, ‘Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.‘ As we head into Term 2, it is important to remember that deep, meaningful learning often feels uncomfortable, and that’s a sign of growth. I want to encourage every student to be brave enough to challenge themselves this term. Tackle the harder problems, speak up in class even when you’re not 100% certain, and view mistakes as stepping stones to success. I particularly want to encourage students to take charge of their learning by seeking out and acting on feedback, allowing them to turn mistakes into learning victories.

ANZAC Day

On Friday 24 April, Senior School students attended an ANZAC Assembly to remember the service men and women who have made sacrifices for our country. Lucy G, a Year 11 student and Cadet, did a wonderful job of sharing how the meaning of ANZAC Day has developed during her time as a Cadet. We also heard from Major Sean Derbyshire, from the Joint Logistics Command of the Australian Defence Force, who shared his experience of being an ANZAC, and the importance of pausing and recognising this day. Our College Captains, Tejasvi S and Nicholas L did a great job hosting the assembly and Tai N did an amazing job of playing the Last Post and Rouse.

Year 11 Careers Expo

On Friday 1 May, Year 11 students and teachers attended the Careers Expo at The Melbourne Exhibition Centre. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to gather information from a wide variety of tertiary institutions, attend VCE Seminars and learn about the different options available to them post secondary school. Thanks to Mr Phil Newnham, Mr James Johnston, Ms Lisa Worthy and Ms Sunita Sewani for their support in organising this opportunity.

Attendance

Please ensure that absences are recorded on Compass on the day and for extended absences please inform the Middle School office so that appropriate support can be provided.

Late to School

If you are running late to Period 0 or Period 1 classes, please ensure you go to the front office or the Middle School office to get signed in before going to your class.

Behaviour Matrix

This year sees the launch of the school wide positive Behaviour Matrix tailored to the MWSC ILEARN values.  The Matrix will be visible in many formats across both campuses, including the school display screens, in sub schools and within subjects.  We would greatly appreciate our community to support the embedding of this educational initiative through conversations at home about the importance of values driven behaviour.

We look forward to a great term together.

Books Build Australia: Let’s Put Reading First for All Australians

Australia Reads is calling on individuals, schools and communities to help place reading more firmly on the national agenda through the next National Cultural Policy.

Reading for pleasure supports learning, wellbeing, empathy, creativity and social connection. However, Australia Reads has highlighted a concerning national reading crisis: around 30% of Australians did not read or listen to a book in the last year, one in three students cannot read proficiently, and 25% of Australian children do not receive a bedtime story.

Australia Reads is encouraging the Federal Government to support national reading campaigns, a library in every school with professional staff and collection budgets, stronger support for educators and parents, greater community access to books, and more promotion of Australian stories, including First Nations creators.

How our community can support reading: MWSC families, staff and community members are encouraged to read the Australia Reads article.

Year 10 Geography – Phillip Island Excursion

Read Time: ( words)

On Wednesday 25 March, the Year 10 Geography classes had the opportunity to attend a field trip excursion to Phillip Island for some data collection. We visited 2 beaches undergoing coastal management strategies and took some observations, relating to the topic we learnt in class. It was interesting to see the structures used to handle the natural and human effects changing the coastal landscape.

During our trip, we visited Smiths Beach and Silverleaves Beach. At these locations, we explored the landscape, which includes the wave patterns, the embankment, groynes, rock bags and crabs! The class took photos, notes, and drew field sketches of our view as we gathered knowledge to complete the fieldwork report.

After visiting both beaches, we ventured into the local town, Cowes, to interview the Philip Island community. We got insight into their opinions on how the erosion on the beaches is managed and how it can affect the neighbourhood beaches.

To finish off our field trip we had lunch in Cowes and the food was great! We then made our way back home with speakers blasting our favourite tunes.
