Books Build Australia: Let’s Put Reading First for All Australians

Australia Reads is calling on individuals, schools and communities to help place reading more firmly on the national agenda through the next National Cultural Policy.

Reading for pleasure supports learning, wellbeing, empathy, creativity and social connection. However, Australia Reads has highlighted a concerning national reading crisis: around 30% of Australians did not read or listen to a book in the last year, one in three students cannot read proficiently, and 25% of Australian children do not receive a bedtime story.

Australia Reads is encouraging the Federal Government to support national reading campaigns, a library in every school with professional staff and collection budgets, stronger support for educators and parents, greater community access to books, and more promotion of Australian stories, including First Nations creators.

How our community can support reading: MWSC families, staff and community members are encouraged to read the Australia Reads article.
