Preparing our students for bright futures

Term 3 is a busy time in our school, where a significant amount of planning begins for the following school year. I would like to thank our Careers and Sub School Teams for their support of students over a busy few weeks. They have been providing expert advice and support through such events as:

• Year 10 Future Options Day
• Years 8-9, 9-10, 10-11 and 11-12 Subject Selection days and evenings
• Year 9 Expo
• Year 10-11 Course Counselling

Our students are very fortunate to have such wonderful support systems in place to allow them to make informed decisions about their future. Thank you also to all parents/carers who have engaged in these processes over the past few weeks.

Neurodiversity Week

Last week we celebrated Neurodiversity Week with a range of information sessions, games and activities. The goal of the week was to help all members of our college community recognise that all brains are different, and that there are many different paths to success. As a school we are very proud of our inclusive environment, and this was a great opportunity to celebrate this diversity!

JLTAV Poster Competition

Congratulations to Yi Yi from year 7 for winning the 2026 JLTAV Poster Competition!

Her artwork was chosen as the winning design from Year 7-12 students all across Victoria. As a result, it will be published on the front cover of the 2026 Year 12 Morning Workbook! Thanks to the Japanese team for supporting our students.

Commonwealth Games success!

Congratulations to alumnus Emily Whitehead who won gold in her third Commonwealth Games in the Women’s’ Gymnastics Team Final. Through her time at MWSC, Emily did a fantastic job of balancing her schooling with her training demands. We are proud to see her success on the global stage.

We also congratulate race-walker Jemima Montag who, despite not being an alumnus, has been a valued community partner, visiting us annually to speak to our students. Jemima won yet another gold medal in the 10000 Metre Race Walk.

Principals’ Day 2026

Friday 7 August marks Principals’ Day 2026, a special opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the outstanding contribution principals and assistant principals make to public education.

School leaders play a vital role in shaping positive learning environments where students, staff, and families can thrive. Their work extends far beyond the classroom, encompassing educational leadership, student wellbeing, community engagement, staff support, and the ongoing improvement of schools.

Today we recognise the dedication, resilience, compassion, and leadership demonstrated by principals across Victorian government primary schools.

We extend our sincere thanks to our school leadership team for their commitment to our students, staff, and wider community.

Junior Campus Action

As you walk around the Junior Campus there is so much happening.  Term 3 is always a busy time at the Junior Campus.

MS Pathways Week

Year 9 and 10 students took part in Pathways Week last week.  This was an opportunity for our students to learn about the different subjects on offer within Years 10 and 11 from our highly experienced Faculty Heads.

We also had external providers on site for the Year 10’s so they are able to make informed pathway choices in their senior years.

Days like these ensure that our students are receiving relevant information so that they can start to prepare for their future journeys, goals and aspirations.

Middle School Information Night

It’s that time of year again when we begin conversations with students and families about the year ahead and start the subject selection process. The Middle School information night gave both students and families valuable insights to help guide their decisions for next year and beyond.

Year 9 Journalism SYN Radio

Our Year 9 Journalism students have started to present their own radio show live on air to be broadcast on SYN Radio.  This experience has provided students with real life experience in the Journalism industry.

Year 9 Intro to Outdoor Ed Community Service Program

Year 9 Intro to Outdoor Ed (Duke of Ed) students represented their school and themselves with pride at the Aveo Fountain Retirement Village.  Students were immersed in deep conversation with the residents and learning whilst they played pool, bingo, table tennis and started to knit!   It was heart warming to see our students connect with the community and learn some new skills along the way.

E-Scooter Safety – What Students and Parents Need to Know

E-scooters are becoming an increasingly popular mode of transport for students and community members alike. With their growing use, it’s important that both parents and students understand the safety requirements and legal responsibilities that come with riding an e-scooter in Victoria.

Below is a summary of the key rules, as outlined by Transport Victoria:

What You Must Do When Riding an E-Scooter

E-scooter riders are required to:

•  Be 16 years of age or older
•  Wear a helmet at all times
•  Ride at a maximum speed of 20 km/h
•  Ride single file – not in tandem or side by side
•  Ride only on:

• • Shared-use paths (not footpaths)
  • Bicycle paths
  • Roads with a speed limit of 60 km/h or less

• Not carry any passengers
• Use front and rear lights (steady or flashing) when riding at night or in low-light conditions
• Park responsibly, ensuring the scooter does not block pedestrian paths or create safety hazards

Why It Matters

These rules are in place to help keep riders and others safe. Failure to follow them can result in fines and puts both the rider and others at risk. As e-scooter use grows, it’s essential we all do our part to promote safe and respectful riding in our community.

We are approaching the half-way point for Term 3. Most of our Year 12s are experiencing a slight lull in SACs, but we are encouraging them to maintain the momentum, keep up to date with their work, and ensure that regular study is still occurring at home. Year 11s should have all completed their course selections for next year in order for us to begin working on our 2027 timetable. A reminder that our wonderful Careers Team are more than happy to meet with students who have questions around their post secondary school options whatever pathway they are considering following.

VCE Information Evenings

Thank you to the parents/carers who attended our online VCE Information Evenings last week, and the in person VCE VM and VET Information Evening the week prior. There is a lot of new information and requirements that exist as students begin their VCE journey and your support is important. The slides and a list of Frequently Asked Questions were shared via Compass following these evenings for your reference. Please remember the subschool is here to support students as they transition from Year 10 to VCE, and from Year 11 to Year 12.

Year 10-11 Course Interviews

On Friday 31 July, Year 10 students were given the opportunity to meet with a staff member to complete their VCE course selection for 2027. The students were well prepared, and it was clear much consideration had gone into their choices. It was rewarding to hear students were making their choices based on subject enjoyment, requirements for possible university courses and the need to have a balanced course load.

Voluntary Contributions

We are seeking your support through voluntary financial contributions to our college.

While the Department of Education provides schools with funding based on student enrolments, this funding covers only a portion of the core operating costs associated with running a school. It supports areas such as staff salaries, utilities, some building maintenance, and curriculum delivery.

However, this funding does not cover many of the additional programs and resources that make a significant difference to our students’ wellbeing, learning, and growth. Classroom consumables, specialist program resources, updated equipment, and enhanced learning opportunities all rely heavily on the support of our school community through voluntary parent contributions.

In addition, improvements across the College, including the repurposing of learning spaces, additional furniture, grounds enhancements, and shade sails, are made possible through fundraising efforts and voluntary parent contributions.

At this stage, contributions received for 2026 are lower than in previous years. While we understand that every family’s circumstances are different, these contributions have a direct impact on the programs, resources, and opportunities we can provide for our students. Lower contribution levels may affect the range and quality of enhancements we are able to offer beyond our core funded programs.

There is still time to contribute, and every contribution, regardless of the amount, is greatly appreciated. If the suggested contribution amount does not suit your circumstances, you can easily adjust the amount in Compass to a level that works for your family.

To make a contribution, please click on the Payments Centre tab in Compass and select 2026 School Contributions. Payment can be made in full or by instalments. If you would like to arrange a custom payment plan, please contact the finance team on 9803 6811 or finance@mwsc.vic.edu.au.

Victorian School Music Festival (VSMF) Strings

Our Year 7–12 string ensembles were the first of our 2026 VSMF entries performing over the past week. Preparing for an event like this requires exceptional effort, from weekly ensemble rehearsals to personal practice to master every part.

Our three ensembles presented polished performances, and the students gained valuable insights during an on-stage tutorial with the chief adjudicators.

Our Results:

• Phoenix Strings – Participation Award (awarded to all beginner groups in this category)
• Presto Strings – Silver Award
• Chamber Strings – Gold Award

Well done to all of our string performers on their outstanding dedication and self-motivation. Congratulations also to our ensemble directors Ms Keryn Lientschnig and Mr Timothy O’Connor for their hard work and support in directing these ensembles.

Lunchtime Concert

Today (Friday), our Stage Band and Jazz Band treated the Senior Campus to a fantastic lunchtime concert in the Senior Campus Fishbowl.

With their upcoming Victorian School Music Festival (VSMF) performances fast approaching, this concert offered an excellent platform for the groups to fine tune their pieces and reflect on their final preparations.

Thank you to all the staff and students who came along to support and encourage our music community at MWSC.

Course Counselling

The Careers Team provides ongoing career counselling and pathway support to students throughout the year. Whether students are choosing subjects, exploring career options, considering university, TAFE, apprenticeships or VET pathways, or simply seeking guidance about their future, individual appointments are always available. Our goal is to ensure every student has the information and support they need to make informed decisions about their education and future pathways.

Future Options Day

Our Year 10 students recently participated in the Future Options Expo held in the Warwick Irwin Hall. The day was a great success, with many students taking the opportunity to speak directly with exhibitors, ask questions, and gain a better understanding of the pathways available to them. The positive feedback from both students and exhibitors highlighted the value of the event, with many Year 10 students leaving feeling more informed and confident about their future subject choices.

Year 12 students were also invited to attend the expo during the afternoon, providing them with another opportunity to discuss tertiary pathways and post-school options with a range of education providers.

Year 12 Career Interviews

Year 12 students have been emailed a link to make their Careers appointment. They are encouraged to choose a convenient time to make their 30 minute meeting.  Whether they are looking into university, TAFE, apprenticeships, or employment, we are here to support their next steps.

Last week’s Year 10 Tertiary Expo was a fantastic success, and one of the highlights was welcoming back several of our alumni who represented their current industries while sharing their own journey from Mount Waverley Secondary College to where they are today.

Students had the opportunity to hear from Peter (Class of 2016) from the Australian Defence Force (ADF), Jessica (Class of 2006) and Juliana (Class of 2012) from the RSPCA, Kavi from Monash University, Jarm and Lisa (Class of 1991) from the Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC), and Helena (Class of 2018) from AG Coombs. While each represented a different organisation and career pathway, what made the day even more special was that they are all proud MWSC alumni.

We are incredibly grateful that our alumni continue to give back to the College by sharing their knowledge and experiences.  Keep an eye out for our upcoming Alumni Newsletter, where you will be able to read more about each of their career journeys.

Spring Allergy and Asthma Information

Allergy season is nearly upon us, so watch out for symptoms of allergic rhinitis (commonly called ‘hay fever’) or asthma. Asthma Australia has a great resource, the Asthma Australia Spring Asthma Checklist, which is really helpful, and we have also provided information and tips for you below. At this time of the year, it is a good idea to:

• Make sure your supplies of antihistamine medications or asthma preventer and reliever medications (inhalers or dry powder medications, also called ‘puffers’) haven’t expired or run out. Visit your pharmacy to buy more supplies if so.
• If you usually have seasonal allergy symptoms, plan to take allergy medications in the morning to prevent these occurring.
• Start taking your asthma preventer medication/inhaler each day if you usually have seasonal asthma symptoms.
• Clean your asthma inhaler device (instructions here), and your spacers (instructions here, clean weekly and consider replacing yearly if used constantly) – don’t forget to check in all your bags (school, sports, swimming, personal) for any extra devices and spacers to clean!
• Monitor pollen counts and weather forecasts via the Melbourne Pollen website or app so that you can make a plan for days with high pollen counts or with a high risk of a thunderstorm asthma event.
• Check in with your doctor or with the free Asthma Australia Educator Service for an update, Asthma Educators can answer your asthma questions. You can Book a FREE phone call at a time that works for you or call direct on 1800ASTHMA (1800 278 462). If you have a current Asthma Action Plan, book an appointment with your doctor for during the September Term 3 school holidays to have a new Asthma Action Plan for 2026 (required yearly) completed to supply that to us in Term 4.
• If you have worsening symptoms of seasonal allergy or asthma, always make an appointment with your doctor for a check-up.

Interact Club – Sausage Sizzle

On Friday 31 July the Interact Club ran a sausage sizzle at lunchtime. There were many different fundraisers in mind, but after some deliberation we landed on the United National Children’s Fund or UNICEF; Their mission is to help children in impoverished regions of the world stay safe, get healthy food and go to school.

All the Interacters had a wonderful time cooking for and serving their fellow classmates. In the end we sold over 250 sausages and raised over $900!

Green Collect Community Clothing & Textile Donation Bin

We are pleased to be hosting a Green Collect Bin this term. Green Collect is a social enterprise that helps keep clothing and textiles out of landfill by giving items a second life through re-use, repair, and recycling.

We encourage families and community members to donate quality, clean clothing and textiles in good condition. Accepted items include:

• Clothing and footwear (in good, reusable condition)
• Towels
• Bed sheets and linen
• Other quality household textiles

Drop-off Location:
The Green Collect donation bin is located inside Gate 2 at the Senior Campus.

Please ensure all donated items are clean, dry, and suitable for re-use where possible.

When Troy Bolton (basketball team captain) and Gabriella Montez (an academically gifted transfer student) join forces, nothing will be the same again for the students of East High. Challenging the status quo of the existing cliques becomes a challenge for all involved. How will the jocks, brainiacs, thespians, skater dudes and cheerleaders break free? We’re all in this together, aren’t we?

Please support the college by purchasing either raffle tickets for $3 each or $15 for a book of 5 tickets or $30 for a book of 10 tickets.

Raffle tickets will be on sale from Tuesday 11 August via Compasstix.  A notification will be emailed to all families once the tickets become available.   Feel free to forward the Compasstix link below to family and friends.  All proceeds will go towards the purchase of student-led college initiatives.

Ticket sales will close on Tuesday 8 September and the raffle will be drawn on Friday 11 September.
