Welcome Back

Welcome back to Term 3 at Mount Waverley Secondary College. I hope everyone enjoyed some special time with family and friends over the holiday break.

Borneo Expedition

Fifteen students and two staff Mr Adam Laan and Ms Sarah Smith, recently travelled to Borneo for 2 weeks to work in communities to help with local projects as well as explore a jungle setting.

The expedition leader, Mr Phil Anderson — who is one of the most experienced and senior expedition leaders — quite literally said the team were one of the best he’s ever led!  Please see Phil’s feedback below:

“They were an awesome group (one of the best I’ve ever led) who were an absolute credit to both their school and Australia. The students were respectful of the culture and embraced all of the challenges thrown at them. As you know, an expedition to Borneo requires appropriate teachers to accompany the trip; individuals that put the students first and are comfortable being uncomfortable in a jungle environment. I couldn’t have asked for two better teachers in Adam and Sarah. Always engaged, nothing phased them and always putting the student’s health and wellbeing first. I hope Adam and Sarah return with Mt Waverley for a future expedition with us. I’d lead this school again in a heartbeat!”

New Zealand Music Tour 

Welcome back to our New Zealand Music Tour staff and students. It sounds like everyone had an absolutely fantastic time. Thanks to Mrs Tijtje Keatley for leading the tour along with Mr Kelvin Nguyen, Ms Cecilia Carlill, Mr Lewis Pierre Humbert, Mr Joseph Yu and Mrs Melissa Knowles for volunteering to supervise students during their holiday period. Experiences such as these are invaluable and it is wonderful to hear how our students and staff met and engaged with music students in various schools and other settings across the Tasman.

Wuxi No.1 High School Visit

Mr Matt Sheehan and I hosted six visitors from Wuxi No.1 High School in China last week. Our guests were very impressed by our school and were fascinated by our approaches to various areas including STEAM subjects, wellbeing, and careers. Thank you to Mr Kevin Hu Principal of the Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School for arranging this visit.

State Cross Country

On Thursday 24 July, 8 students headed to the Yarra Glen racetrack to participate in this year’s State Cross Country. Our students performed extremely well, and Seth J of Year 8 came 6^th in the 14-year-old boys and Frances S and Aisha H of Year 11 came 12^th and 15^th respectively in the 17–20-year-old girls.

We could not be prouder of our runners! Thanks to Mr Danny Gwynne and Mr Jay Newport Sports Leaders for supporting our Cross Country team.

VCE Conferences

Our VCE Student/Parent /Teacher conferences were held recently. The conferences focused on providing further feedback as to what the student needs to do to complete their VCE/Vocational Major subjects to the best of their ability.

House Athletics Carnival

Nearly 1000 students attended the House Athletics at the Knox Athletics track on Friday 1 August. I had the pleasure of visiting on the day and watching our students compete in various events. Well done to Mr Danny Gwynne and Mr Jay Newport our Sports Leaders for their great work in organising this whole school event.

Thank you to all the staff who helped make this day a success for our students. We now look forward to District Athletics later in the term.

North Eastern Victoria Region Spotlight Concert

Our Senior Stage Band performed at the NEVR Youth Concert ‘Spotlight Concert’ at the Melbourne Recital Centre last Monday. The group auditioned to perform at this esteemed event back in Week 6 of Term 1.

This event featured 13 schools and 220 students from secondary schools in the north-eastern region of the state coming together in a celebration of music and collaboration.

Thank you to Mrs Tijtje Keatley Music Director and conductor and Mr Kelvin Ngyuen for supporting the students backstage on the night and who also attended rehearsals during the day. Congratulations to all the NEVR instrumental music staff, teachers, students, and families who worked together to put on this night which celebrates how wonderful State Education is.

Languages Day 

On Wednesday we celebrated languages Day on the Junior Campus. This is a day to recognise that we live in the great state of Victoria, and we are a very multicultural society with 230 nations represented and 180 languages spoken across the state.

At a Junior Campus assembly, I spoke to our students about why it is important to learn another language. During periods 3&4 Year 8 students were involved in some cultural activities and at lunchtime students were able to enjoy their obento boxes or pretzels. A Germany versus Japan soccer match also took place.

Mount Waverley Secondary College proudly presents “Split Earth”, the Musical

‘Split Earth’ is a brand new, Sci-Fi rock musical, with an original book, music and lyrics by Australian drama teachers, Ms Madeleine Kerr and Mr Matthew Weekes.The story is set in a future where the Earth has been split into two separate half planets: Solara, a utopia of light and abundance for humanity, and Atra, a shadow planet mined by AI. Hailed as an environmental triumph, the split was led by tech company CEO Adair Wright, who lost his wife and daughter in the process.

Ten years later, Adair’s surviving daughter Aurora begins to question everything as mysterious earthquakes rock Solara. As she uncovers long-buried truths about her family and the split, she must choose between comfort and revolution. A story of power, betrayal, and the fight for a better world.

Term 3 PE Program

The Year 8 students are currently enjoying their self-defence unit in conjunction with Melbourne Taekwondo Club. Likewise, the Year 7s have been heading to Monash Pool for their swimming lessons. Later in the term our Year 8s will attend the Bounce trampoline centre, while the Year 7s will be completing a gymnastics unit. These programs are a great addition to the PE curriculum, teaching our students valuable life skills.

Languages Day

On Wednesday 30 July the Junior Campus held our annual Languages Day, where we celebrate the cultures of Japan and Germany. We held our traditional assembly in the morning, where we were treated to some German poetry recitals, and a great Japanese dance by our Year 7s.

The Year 8s then took part in either a German Oompah band, or a Japanese comedy performance. Finally, students and staff enjoyed some delicious Bento boxes and German pretzels for lunch, while watching the traditional Japan vs German soccer game.

It was great to see our students celebrating a love of languages. Well done to the Languages Faculty for their organisation.

JLTAV Poster Competition Winner

We’re thrilled to announce that Jessica H from 7B had her poster selected by the Japanese Language Teachers’ Association of Victoria (JLTAV) as one of only two winning entries to be featured in the 2025 Year 12 Revision Booklets, which are distributed to students across the entire state.

This is wonderful recognition of Jessica’s talent and creativity.  Please join us in congratulating Jessica on this truly remarkable achievement! We are incredibly proud of her.

Year 9 2026 Subject Selection

Next week our Year 8s will participate in the Year 9 2026 Subject Information Evening. This is an exciting time for students as they start to think about their transition to the Senior Campus, and all of the new academic opportunities on offer. I would encourage all families to discuss the options, and check the website for more information before submitting selections in the coming weeks. We are organising a range of activities at school to support student transitions over the coming months.

Signing in and out of school

This is a reminder to all families that, where possible, all appointments etc. should be arranged outside of school hours. When this is not possible, it is important that you keep us informed via Compass. When collecting your child early, please inform us beforehand so that we can make for a more smooth exit from school. At Year 7 and 8, it is compulsory that an approved adult collects the student from the office. We will not allow any student to make their own way off campus before the end of the school day.

Welcome back!

At the end of Term 2 we celebrated the achievements of our Year 11 students at a celebration assembly. We recognised those students that had upheld our ILEARN values of integrity, learning, excellence, accountability, respect and nurturing, as well as those students with 100% attendance. 

As Term 3 begins we are reminding our Year 12s that whilst they are fast approaching the end of their secondary schooling journey, there is still a lot to get through before we get there. Last term we held an assembly with our Year 12s to encourage them to make “every day count” instead of counting the days. Students were reminded that the subschool and their teachers are here to support them and we would like to encourage all students to reach out if they need help. 

2026 Course Selection

The course selection process for 2026 has begun and will continue next week. An information night for VCE VM and VET has already taken place on Tuesday 29 June and a course information session will be held for parents and students in Years 11 and 12 in 2026 on Tuesday 5 August to explain the process and answer FAQs. Slides and key information will be shared to all parents and students following each evening. Most students in Year 11 will continue on with the subjects they are studying this year, any students wishing to change must discuss this with someone from the Senior Subschool. 

Next week on Friday 8 August, 2026 Year 11s will have subject selection interviews. They will discuss their chosen subjects with a staff member and receive support with making their subject selections. We encourage any student unsure about subject choice, career options, questions about VCE or life after school to make an appointment to chat with either Ms Victoria Tortopidis or Mr Phil Newnham from our Careers team.

Graduation Dinner

In 2025 Year 12 students will celebrate the culmination of 13 years of schooling by attending a formal dinner at the Caulfield Racecourse. Last year was the first time in several years that we held a formal dinner and it was a fantastic way to recognise the significant achievement of finishing secondary school and we look forward to a fantastic night. Please make sure that you keep an eye on Compass to respond to any required actions for this event. 

VCE Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences

On Thursday 24 July VCE parents and students were given the opportunity to meet with teachers. This opportunity is provided early in Term 3 to our VCE parents to allow for the discussion of students’ Semester One reports, and areas for improvement moving into Semester Two with enough time to ensure that change is possible. We hope the interviews also provided an opportunity for parents, students and teachers of Year 11 students to discuss subjects for 2026.

VCE Premier’s Awards

On Wednesday 2 July, myself, Mrs Karen Wade and Ms Lynette Spiller had the pleasure of attending a ceremony for the Premier’s VCE Awards. The awards recognise top performing students for their academic achievements for their VCE or VCE subjects in 2024.

For the first time top performing students in the VCE Vocational Major were also recognised. We had 3 students receive awards for their academic performance in a VCE Study. VCAA uses Individual Graded Assessment scores to determine the order of merit and identify the best students, students must also receive a study score of 46 or above. Both Neyssa S (Health and Human Development) and Maya C (Art Making and Exhibiting) received Premier’s Awards for their achievements in a VCE subject after both receiving study scores of 50.

We would like to recognise Ms Cara Hill (Health and Human Development) and Ms Lynette Spiller for all their work in supporting the students with this achievement. One current Year 11 student also received a Premier’s award for her achievements in Hungarian, which she studies externally, so we also had the pleasure of congratulating Petra H on her achievement. 

Absences

Attendance in VCE is important to support students to experience success in their chosen studies. The school has attendance policies in place to support our students to meet the required number of hours of class time to meet the requirements set out by the VCAA. The Year Level Coordinators will be monitoring attendance and communicating with parents should concerns around attendance arise. If you are contacted regarding concerns about your student’s attendance we ask for support to ensure that you are supporting their attendance at school. Please also ensure medical certificates are acquired if a student is absent on the day of an assessment task or SAC/SAT.

Uniform

Terms 2 and 3 are Winter Uniform terms.  Please ensure you are in the correct winter uniform, including ties.  Combinations of summer and winter uniforms are not permitted.  If for any reason you are not in the proper full school uniform, please bring a note from home and come to the Middle School office for a uniform pass.

Mobile Phones/Ear Pods

As per DET policies, mobile phones are not to be visible on school grounds.  Once you come into the MWSC gates please ensure you keep your phones in your bag which are then to be placed in your locker, this also applies to your ear pods.  The mobile phone policy will be followed through with in the event of visible phones or ear pods on school grounds.

Attendance

Please ensure that absences are recorded on Compass on the day and for extended absences please inform the Middle School office so that appropriate support can be provided.

Late to School

If you are running late to Period 0 or Period 1 classes, please ensure you go to the front office or the Middle School office to get signed in before going to your class.

Project Rockit

Growing up, Rosie and Lucy Thomas saw the impacts of bullying all around them. Words and actions cut to the core of a person’s confidence, sense of belonging and identity. For those who experience bullying firsthand, those who witness it, and those inflict hate, the long-term negative outcomes are profound. But as we’re finding our way through school, the connection is felt beyond the stats, it’s deeply personal.

As high school students, they sat through lectures and programs that told them “don’t bully”, “just ignore it”, “walk away” or “turn off your device” – tired advice that offered no real solution and placed full responsibility on the person being targeted.

Rosie and Lucy saw an opportunity – to create genuine, lasting change in schools we need to elevate young people as leaders on the issues that impact them most. That’s when ‘PROJECT ROCKIT’ was born.

Project Rockit workshops bring young passionate presenters into the school to facilitate a youth-driven, evidence-based learning experience for students. Their approach is built on the simple premise that young people can create positive change in the world around them – their job is to cultivate the skills, confidence and connection needed to do exactly that.

2025 Sustainability Conference

On 23 July, ten members of the MWSC Sustainability Warriors attended the Sustainability Conference, held annually by the four schools within the Monash Council.

This year, Brentwood Secondary College had the opportunity to host the meeting, and we kicked off with an icebreaker, introducing ourselves and naming what piece of rubbish we would be, which was a fantastic start to the conference. This was followed by a presentation from a Monash Council representative on how waste is generated in schools, how we can prevent it through Refuse, Reuse and Recycle protocols, and how we could better understand its accumulation through a waste audit, which the Year 8 students were keen to organise at our school.

The event featured the many ways other schools address challenges in inventive ways, like competitions between the houses. It was wonderful to work together on our main focus of figuring out how to reduce waste in our respective schools. This was followed by a roundtable conference, where we, along with other schools, were able to present some common challenges and concerns we were facing in our journey to sustainability and had discussions on how to address them.

We wrapped up with a chance to learn about Brentwood Secondary’s sustainability initiatives, as they are rated a 5-Star ResourceSmart School, inspiring us with a variety of ideas we could implement at our school.

Throughout the conference, we learned a great deal from the other schools. We asked questions, reflected on their experiences, and set a clear goal to work towards. We would like to thank Brentwood Secondary College, our teachers, and our school for organising this event.

Year 11 Leaders

Welcome back to all our musical families for what promises to be an exciting term of music. Our students have been working incredibly hard, and we have a fantastic line-up of events to look forward to.

This term, nine of our ensembles will be performing at the Victorian School Music Festival (VSMF). This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to showcase their talent and receive valuable feedback from professional adjudicators, many of whom have travelled from overseas to attend the event. In addition, two of our ensembles will be traveling to Ballarat to compete in the Royal South Street Eisteddfod, a prestigious competition that attracts performers from all over Victoria.

We are also incredibly proud to announce that two of our students have been selected to feature in the upcoming Victorian State Schools Spectacular. This is a tremendous achievement and a testament to their dedication and skill. Congratulations to Ananya H and Prosper W (Year 12). I look forward to attending and celebrating your musical achievements.

New Zealand Music Tour

I am excited to report on the recent Mount Waverley Secondary College Music Tour to New Zealand, which took place from 16 – 23 July. A group of 45 students and six staff members embarked on an unforgettable eight-night journey, visiting Auckland, Hamilton, and Rotorua.

The tour was a wonderful blend of musical performance, cultural immersion, and sightseeing. Our students participated in five different exchanges with local secondary schools and a polytechnic university, forging new friendships and sharing their musical talents. We were incredibly proud of their performances and their exemplary behaviour. We hope to host some of these schools in the future, as they have promised to visit us here in Melbourne.

Beyond the performances, the students had the opportunity to experience the beautiful sights of New Zealand. Highlights included a trip to the famous Weta Workshop, exploring Hobbiton, and enjoying the fun and exciting Skyrail and Luge rides. They also had a unique cultural experience with a Hāngī barbecue and witnessed the spectacular geysers at night before relaxing at a Polynesian Spa.

One of the most moving parts of the tour was the chance to engage with traditional Māori culture. Our students and staff were honoured to participate in Māori welcome ceremonies, which were both educational and deeply emotional. The students’ impeccable behaviour, manners, and musical abilities made us incredibly proud throughout the entire tour. It was a busy but amazing experience that created lasting memories for everyone involved.

A big thank you to our staff who volunteered to attend alongside of myself to make this tour possible; Mr Joseph Yu, Ms Melissa Knowles, Ms Cecilia Carlill, Mr Lewis Pierre-Humbert and Mr Kelvin Nguyen.

NEVR Spotlight Concert

Back in Term 1, our Stage Band prepared and submitted an audition to be featured in the NEVR Spotlight Concert. This special event showcases exceptional musical talent from government schools across the North Eastern region of Victoria. We were thrilled when we learned our band had been accepted. 

On Monday 28 July, our talented musicians had the exciting opportunity to perform alongside other high-level school groups. The concert was held at the beautiful Recital Centre in Southbank, providing a truly wonderful and professional experience for all involved.

As the ensemble director, I couldn’t be prouder of this dedicated and hard-working group. It was an honour for them to be chosen to represent our college at such a prestigious event, and their performance was a testament to their talent and commitment.

Financial Contributions

The 2025 Parent Financial Contributions are available on your Parent Portal in Compass. Please click on the ‘Payments Centre’ tab, under the heading of 2025 School Contributions.

While the Department of Education provides funding to schools each year on a per student enrolled basis, this funding only covers a portion of the core operating costs of running the school. It covers things like classroom teacher salaries, contract cleaning, gas and electricity, water rates, telephone, some repairs to buildings, some administration, and some curriculum support.

The funding does not cover the additional programs run at MWSC that support our student’s wellbeing and growth, or the consumables required in the classrooms for use throughout the 2025 school year. Our specialist programs rely heavily on parent contributions to ensure we have access to the latest equipment and resources.

Additional projects around the school including garden upgrades, repairs to buildings, outdoor furniture and shade sails are all only made possible via fundraising and parent contributions, department funding does not cover these items.

We would like to thank families who have already supported the school by making a contribution to their child’s education.

A Celebration of Culture and Communication

On Wednesday 30 July, the Junior Campus came alive with vibrant celebrations for Languages Day 2025. The day was dedicated to deepening students’ understanding of the Japanese and German languages and immersing them in the rich cultures behind them. The aim of Languages Day was to ignite students’ curiosity, encourage them to pursue language learning, and offer a fun and memorable cultural experience. It was a day of exploration, discovery, and celebration.

The festivities began with a Language Assembly led by Senior Campus Language Captains Zahra A and Ananya J. They shared personal reflections on their language learning journeys and spoke about how learning another language can open doors to exciting opportunities in the future.  A highlight of the assembly was the cultural performances by our talented Year 7 and 8 students. Year 7 Japanese students impressed the audience with a spirited performance of Soran Bushi, a traditional Japanese dance, while the Year 7 and 8 German students captivated everyone with their recitations of German poetry.

Following the assembly, Year 8 students took part in interactive cultural workshops. Japanese students attended a Rakugo workshop led by professional performer Showko. Her engaging session included puppet theatre, ventriloquism, and a fascinating introduction to the history and tradition of Rakugo storytelling. Meanwhile, German students were treated to a performance by the Black Forest Band, a Bavarian group that brought a taste of German folklore to the campus. Students got hands-on experience ringing alpine bells, learning how to yodel, and trying out the energetic ‘slap dancing’ style.

The day concluded with a festive atmosphere: special themed lunches and an exciting soccer match between Japan and Germany. In a spirited soccer game, the German team emerged victorious with a 2–0 win. Languages Day 2025 was truly a celebration of culture, language, and connection—an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

On Thursday 3 July, our Unit 3&4 Biology students attended an excursion to Werribee Zoo. As part of their studies, they explored the role of the immune system and DNA manipulation techniques by analysing a case study on the Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpes Virus (EEHV). Students also reflected on the bioethical considerations of keeping elephants in captivity and the threats they face in the wild.

The excursion was an invaluable experience that allowed us Biology students to learn about the threats that elephants face such as EEHV (Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus ). We were given the opportunity to examine and compare various elephant artefacts, such as real elephant teeth! Alongside that activity, we had knowledgeable zoo guides who explained a lot of interesting information to us about the history of the artefacts and the zoo itself! Going to Werribee Zoo also aided us in learning about immunity, which is a crucial topic in Unit 3/4 Biology!

We ended the day with a fantastic safari experience where we got to see a range of animals out in an open range that replicated their natural habitats! Thank you to the school and our teachers for organising such a great excursion!

Tejasvi S  (Year 11)

The Senior Campus has 43 participants in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge from Years 9 – 12.

So far, 13 students have completed the challenge by reading at least 15 books since February this year. 6 students have read over 20 books and one Year 12 student, Maddy H has read 59!  This is an impressive effort considering the study requirements of Year 12.

I am very proud of this small but dedicated group of students. I am sure they have benefited from their commitment to the challenge and I look forward to celebrating their achievements at the conclusion of the challenge on the 5 September.    Well done Team!

The Junior Campus has 41 students participating in the PRC and seven have completed the requirements to date.  The Year 7s add the books they have read to a reading log as part of their literacy reading programme during English.  Many students like to dip in and out of books and we are always pleased when they encourage each other to borrow books that they recommend. Books in the Twilight series have been the most popular reads by Year 7s and many Year 8s have gone on to read other books in the Hunger Games series after reading The Hunger Games as a text for English. 

During the English reading programme in the library we emphasise that it is not the number of books that students read but how they grow in reading across genres and topics.  Well done to all the students and please encourage your students to contact Mrs Thomas if they would like help to join the challenge. I can help in the library or send them a link of useful tips.

The Junior Campus will celebrate the achievements of  all participants during Book Week and at the end of the Challenge.

High Ability and Wednesday Homework Club Coordinator

Year 7 & 8 Careers Lunchtime Drop-in Question Time – Junior Campus

These popular sessions are returning this term.  Careers will host the Careers Lunchtime Drop-in Sessions for Year 7 and 8 students to “ask me anything” about career and pathways. These sessions offer students the opportunity to explore career pathways and ask question in an informal setting. Starting 12 August and continuing fortnightly to the end of term, 26 August, 9 September.

Year 10 Future Options Day

Next week, our Year 10 students will participate in a University Expo held in the Warwick Irwin Hall, where institutions will showcase their courses and answer questions about prerequisites, helping students make informed decisions when selecting their VCE subjects. These guest speakers have been chosen based on Year 10 student preferences, ensuring the sessions are relevant and aligned with their interests.

Students are encouraged to book a careers appointment if they haven’t already, to explore their options beyond school. Whether they are considering university, TAFE, apprenticeships, or entering the workforce, we’re here to support them in planning their next steps.
