Thank you and farewell MWSC

It is with much excitement and some sadness that I write to the Mount Waverley school community for the last time having just been provisionally appointed as the new Principal of Frankston High School commencing in 2021.

It has been an absolute privilege to work at Mount Waverley Secondary College over the past four years with all of the students, staff, families and community partners during this time. I am extremely proud of how the school community has continued to grow and ensure we provide an outstanding education and holistic approach to support the development of each and every student.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the wonderful leaders, teachers and education support staff I have had the pleasure to work with during this time, along with the equally wonderful students and parents. Thank you to the past and present School Council for your work and support, it has been incredibly rewarding to lead the Junior Campus and work closely with you over this time to focus on continued improvement and an exciting future for the college.

Thank you to our College Executive Team, in particular, our College Principal Mrs Karen Wade for all of her leadership and support. It is a great privilege to be appointed as the next Principal of Frankston High School where Karen Wade worked for many years as a Campus Principal.

I wish the entire Mount Waverley Secondary College community a safe and enjoyable break, and a rewarding and exciting future.

Early Commencement Program (ECP)

The ECP ran for students in Years 7 to 11 and was very successful. Students in Year 8 were able to spend time on the Senior Campus and had an opportunity to settle in and meet their new teachers. VCE students were given homework to do and this must be completed before they start school next year. Students have access to this information via the college intranet and through Google classrooms which have been set up by teachers.

Thank you to all of the staff who organised and taught in the program and to the students who attended classes. It makes for a very positive start to the new academic year.

Reports

All reports will be available via Compass on Friday 11 December after 4pm – please log in to the parent portal to access this. The reports provide an opportunity for further discussions at home around progress and achievement on Common Assessment Tasks and/or School Assessed Coursework and for Year 9 to 11 students their exam results. Each assessment item also includes advice on areas for improvement.
I would like to acknowledge the hard work of teachers in assessing, marking exams and writing reports at a very busy time of the year.   A special thank you to Mr Andrew Wallace one of our Information Technology team who have overseen and managed the process.

Year 12 results

On Wednesday 30 December all students who have completed a Units 3&4 subject will receive their results.  Year 12 students who have applied for a tertiary course will also receive an ATAR.

The college is open on Wednesday 30 December for students and their parents to come onsite.  Ms Lisa McKiernan (Head of Senior School) and I will be on campus and Ms Jo Hall (Head of Careers) will be available during this period remotely.   Please check Compass for updated communications around this process.

Congratulations to our 2021 VCE cohort on successfully completing their first week of Year 11 and 12. Although this year has posed many challenges for our students it was pleasing to see students approach the Early Commencement Program with a positive attitude ready to try their best for the year ahead.

Whilst I encourage everyone to have a restful break over the holiday period, students should ensure that they complete the set homework prior to commencing term 1 2021. Being up to date with homework tasks will ensure that you set yourself up to achieve success.

On behalf of the sub school team, I would like to wish all of our VCE students and their families a safe and happy holiday break.

Student Voice Report

Read Time: ( words)

When our 2020 College Captains Lynn Li and Amit and Deputy Captains Jennifer and Riyah were appointed at the end of 2019, they knew that they would be leading their cohort through one of the toughest years of their lives; however, none of us could have imagined what would unfold this year. The Covid-19 pandemic meant student voice and leadership was a little different in 2020, but it also highlighted just how powerful student voice is and how much we value student voice at our college.

Captains Lynn Li, Amit, Jennifer and Riyah have done an incredible job leading the Year 12 team and their year level through the challenges of remote learning this year. Our Year 12 Student Leaders met via Google Meet during Remote Learning in Terms 2 and 3 and worked together to support students in their year level and increase student motivation and morale. This included working closely with their Year Level Coordinators, Ms Cara Hill and Ms Bec Kosach, and with Mr Paul Graham on a range of wellbeing initiatives including a Year 12 page on the new Student Wellbeing website.

Mr Nic Barca, Leader of Junior School, continued to support our Year 8 Student Leadership Team to run regular meetings during remote learning.  The Year 8 leaders worked together to create some fun activities for students during Home Group and provided valuable feedback to the Junior School team about their experiences during Remote Learning.

2020 has been a very different year, but despite the challenges of remote learning our students have continued to make the most of opportunities to contribute to the school and broader community. This has included participation in a range of online forums, competitions, and conferences.

This week it was announced that Junior Campus Principal Andrew Batchelor has been appointed as the new Principal of Frankston High School. I would like to thank Andrew, on behalf of our student leaders, for his support of Student Voice and Leadership over his four years at the college, and in particular, over the past three years as Junior Campus Principal.  Andrew has worked closely with the Junior Campus Captains and has actively supported the Rotary Interact Club, Junior Teach the Teacher, and the Mount Matters program. We are beyond grateful for Andrew’s leadership and support, and wish him all the best in his new role as Principal of Frankston High School.

A special thank you to Mr Nic Barca and the Junior School Team for their ongoing work and support with our Year 8 Student Leadership, and to Ms Antia Hill and Ms Rebecca Kosach for their support of our Year 12 leaders. We are very proud of all of the students involved in student voice and leadership initiatives at the college, and congratulate all of them on another very successful year!

Student Leadership Planning Day

On Friday 11 December our 2021 Captains Lila, Aarya, Jaquelyn and Francis led a Student Leadership Planning Day for our 2021 Year 8 and Year 12 student leaders. The day began with ice-breakers and team-building games and the morning session focused on qualities of MWSC student leaders. The middle of the day centered around brainstorming and planning.  Mr Liam Wall (Sport Coordinator – Senior campus) worked with the Senior Sports and House Captains to brainstorm and plan events and a re-vamp of our House structure. Ms Antia Hill and Ms Bec Kosach (Year 12 Coordinators) worked with the Year 12 Prefects and Captains, and Mr Nic Barca and Mr John Simon worked with our Year 8 Leadership Team.  In the afternoon we heard from 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 student leader alumni, who shared their insights into leadership and advice for our new student leaders. Thank you to our wonderful captains for planning and facilitating the day, and to the staff who attended and supported planning sessions.

Music Director’s Report

College Music
Read Time: ( words)

With the school year wrapping up, it has been wonderful as Director of Music at Mount Waverley Secondary College to reflect on all of the great musical achievements that have occurred throughout the year, despite COVID-19. Through remote learning, our instrumental students continued to improve and strive for excellence on their chosen instrument. Through opportunities such as recording sessions, and online rehearsals, students mastered some new music specific ICT skills. Many families have contacted me after experiencing music lessons first hand due to learning taking place at home. Many were impressed with the quality of the education provided despite remote teaching and the inspiration it gave students so continue to practice and master their instruments.

The end of the year has been a busy time re enrolling students. Currently the violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar and bass guitar are completely full. However, we still have some positions for lessons in 2021 in the following instruments:

  • Clarinet
  • Saxophone
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • French Horn
  • Euphonium
  • Tuba
  • Vocals
  • Drums/Percussion

If your student is interested in taking lessons on one of these instruments in 2021 from our quality music staff, please take the time to explore our new MWSC Music Website: https://sites.google.com/view/mwscmusic

This website includes instrument demonstrations, advice on instruments, and the enrolment forms and much more. Any completed enrollment forms need to be returned via email to mca@mwsc.vic.edu.au

On a final note, I would like to personally thank the entire music community at the college for the support and resilience shown in a tough year. The music faculty is looking forward to starting ensembles early in Term 1 and moving forward to some exciting musical events we have planned for the new year.

Congratulations to the following students who have successfully completed an interview to be invited to join the 2021 Music Leadership Team.   I look forward to working with you.

Mrs Tijtje Keatley
