Term 2 – Welcome back

I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. I am excited to have started my seventh year of service as your College Principal at Mount Waverley Secondary College this term. It’s inspiring for me to be part of a learning community where teachers and students are passionate about doing their best and join together as a supportive team to unite in a spirit of cooperation and success.

Uniform Changeover Time

Just a reminder that all students should now be wearing winter uniform, which includes wearing the college tie. Please ensure that your students have the correct college uniform which is only supplied by PSW.
PSW has recently moved and is now located at 342 -350 Springvale Road, Glen Waverley (behind Officeworks). The new PSW store will commence trading at 9am on Friday 30 April 2021.

ANZAC Sub School Assemblies

Last Monday 26 April we held three sub school assemblies to recognise the importance of ANZAC Day. I spoke to the students and showed a video clip about the history of the day and our Business Manager Mrs Linda Westgarth spoke about her family’s history with the ANZACs. Both her grandfather and her husband’s grandfather fought in the First World War and Mrs Westgarth was able to talk about personal visits to the Western Front War Cemeteries as well as visiting the town of Villers Bretonneux in France.

Our College Captains Lila and Aarya and Junior Campus Captains Yash and Riveen also read the moving poems ‘In Flanders Fields’ and ‘The Ode’.
We were also lucky enough to hear Mr Joseph Yu and Tom S from Year 10 play the ‘Last Post’ and ‘The Rouse’ on the trumpet as we all observed a minutes silence.

ANZAC Day is a day for all Australians, regardless of religion, racial background or place of birth. It is a day to commemorate the bravery and self-sacrifice of past and present generations of Australians, so that Australia can be a place of freedom for all. Lest we forget.

State Swimming Success

Nine students represented our school at the School Sport Victoria State Swimming Championships, held recently at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.  Our students achieved some excellent times in the pool and achieved some of our best ever results at the State level.

Congratulations to our gold medallist in three events, George H of Year 8 who won the 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke and came second in the 50m breaststroke and Aleisha C of Year 7 who won gold in the 50m backstroke. What fantastic achievements!

Well done to our U14 medley relay team of George H, Austin H, Jake N and Jon W who won a bronze medal and our U13 50m freestyle relay team Austin H, George H, Hyuga W, Seth S who won a silver medal.
This year it was wonderful that staff and parents/Carers could see the events by live stream. Thank you to Mr Danny Gwynne for accompanying our students on the day.

Student Parent Teacher Conferences

I have received a lot of positive feedback from parents, students and staff regarding our Virtual Student Parent Teacher Conferences held on Tuesday 30 March. Such large numbers attending online clearly demonstrates that Mount Waverley Secondary College parents and students value the learning opportunity on offer and enthusiastically seek teacher support to reflect on their progress, with the aim of continually improving to achieve excellence in learning outcomes. Can I encourage all parents to ensure that your student is present for these interviews, so that they can take ownership of their learning.

Sir John Monash Awards

Last month the 2020 Sir John Monash Awards were celebrated. These awards honour outstanding members of our community, the event was delayed last year due to COVID-19.

Congratulations to Boris L of Year 10 who won the Youth Leadership Award. Boris is a founding member of the Monash Youth Ambassadors program with Monash Youth Services.  Boris has dedicated his time to this program to provide an active voice for other young people in the community. Boris engages in Monash Youth Service’s annual youth consultations and community focus groups, with engagement from 2500 young people across the municipality.

From meeting with the Monash Sustainability Team to discuss how young people can support environmental action, through to his most recent contribution to the Monash Community Engagement Policy Consultation.  Boris provides his own perspective, yet also represents his peers in these settings.

As if this isn’t enough, Boris is currently completing his Duke of Edinburgh Program – Bronze Award and decided to progress his skills even further by doing the Monash Young Men’s Leadership Program.  Well done Boris!

Rotary Club of Mount Waverley ANZAC Breakfast

On Wednesday 28 April, 24 students from years 8, 10, and 12 attended an ANZAC Day Commemorative breakfast organised by the Rotary Club of Mount Waverley. The ANZAC Centenary Walkway, on the grounds of the Mount Waverley Community Centre, provided the perfect backdrop for a morning of reflection on, and appreciation for, the contributions of all returned servicemen and women.

After listening to stirring renditions of Waltzing Matilda and Amazing Grace from a local bagpiper, the students enjoyed some short historical remarks from members of Rotary, before sharing breakfast with members of the local community. Not only was it a wonderful chance to reflect, it was a valuable opportunity to bring generations together to celebrate in the spirit of community.

We thank Ms Hayley Dureau, for overseeing the event, and Mr Jacob Myers, Ms Sam Cody, Mrs Meagan Merlino, Ms Sarah Chase, and Mr Matt Sheehan, for attending

Virtual Open Night

It was wonderful viewing all the videos made for prospective parents for our 2021 Virtual Open Night and hearing feedback from all members of our learning community regarding the virtual WebEx meetings that took place on the evening of Thursday 29 April. A lot of hard work and preparation goes into an event such as this and I would like to thank Mr Matt Sheehan Acting Campus Principal and the Junior Sub School Team, Mrs Narda McLennan Marketing and Events Manager and Alumni Ethan Bibile for overseeing the organisation of Open Night and all of the Faculty Heads for their input into the video clips and for meeting parents on the night to discuss their subject areas.

School Tours for prospective parents are now available on both campuses, please see our college the website for further details.
