The energetic buzz and the enthusiastic start to the year heralds a real sense of optimism about what can be achieved in and out of the classroom.  I encourage each student to make the most of class time, build a positive working relationship with his or her teachers and make the commitment to perform at his or her best.

Learning to grow and growing to learn

At our first  Senior Campus Assembly I shared with students three simple questions to help them focus on their learning growth across 2020.
At school, learning growth is about increasing student’s knowledge and skills in the eight learning areas and of equal importance is developing their emotional and social skills.  Growth is an outcome, an outcome of what you do each day.  It’s all about making choices.  Learning Growth at school is about choice, by asking these three questions students can focus on learning growth each lesson, each day and every week.

Question 1:  Did I take every learning opportunity today?

The first thing to learn is to take every learning opportunity that comes their way.  Take every opportunity to grow – make the choice!

Question 2:  Was that my best effort?”

Opportunities are important and so is effort and hard work.  “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.”  Growth doesn’t just happen through putting in effort for one lesson, one day or for one week, it’s requires a long term ongoing commitment to hard work.

 Question 3:  ”So, what’s next?”

This question is about a choice of what to do next, to keep growing and improving.  It is a future focused question that sets a goal for the next phase of growth.

In summary – students should take every learning opportunity, put in their best effort always and look forward to what’s next!
