Arts Festival

Our annual Arts Festival was held last Tuesday.  The quality of our students’ art work continues to amaze me and many awards were presented to students.  We also were entertained by musical items, Drama performances and Media films.  Congratulations to Ms Jane Carter, Head of The Arts and all of the Arts students and staff who were involved on the night.

Soweto Program

For the past two years Mount Waverley Secondary College has hosted a Year 11 student from Letsibogo Girls’ High School in Soweto Johannesburg, South Africa. This is a program that started in my first school, Frankston High School over 20 years ago. Before this program started no girl from this school had ever attended university. Now some of the girls we have hosted over the years have become doctors, nurses, engineers and teachers. Gole who we hosted at the college in 2017 has just informed me that she has been offered a bursary for chemical engineering next year at Stellenbosch University in Western Cape. This program is truly life changing for these girls.

This year we have hosted Mbali and she is due to return home at the end of the exam period. Whilst two families hosted over the holiday periods, my family hosted Mbali for the year and it was a rich and fulfilling experience. Next year however I need more families to volunteer to host our next Year 11 female student. Ideally families would host for a term. I would hate to see this program end at our college, as it gives our students an insight into another culture and how privileged we are to have the lifestyle we lead.

If your family is able to help support this philanthropic program next year could you please contact me.

Last Working Bee for 2018 – Senior Campus

Our last working bee for 2018 will be held on Sunday 25 November from 9am until 12 noon.  If you can spare some time on this day to help it would be great to see you at the Senior Campus.

Mango Drive

Thank you to all the families who ordered a tray of mangoes in this year’s Mango Drive.  We are expecting the mangoes to be delivered in the week starting 26 November.  Families will be notified when they arrive and where to collect your order.

Presentation Night

This year, Presentation Night will be held on Friday 14 December at The Besen Centre, from 7.00pm at 87-89 Station Street, Burwood.  Students will be notified if they are to receive an award.  Details regarding purchase of tickets will be published over the next few weeks.

Safety of Students

The start and the end of the school day is a very busy time and it is essential parents and friends consider student safety when picking up and dropping off students. Please be aware that Monash Council bylaw officers are extremely vigilant and people are fined if dropping off or picking up students in ‘No Standing’ areas. Please do not enter college carparks before or after school as this causes a traffic flow problem for staff cars. There are many side streets near the college that are much safer options.

Walking to and from school in groups:

Could I ask parents of children who walk to and from school to make sure they do so in groups? This enhances their safety. Please remind your children they should not approach strangers and encourage them to report any strangers acting in a suspicious manner to a responsible adult such as a parent or teacher.

Timetable Changes for 2019

As previously published, in 2019 we will be moving to a seven period day for our some of our senior students.  The day will start at 8.30am for Year 10 and VCE students (when they have a timetabled period 0 class) and finish at 3pm (unless they have earlier finishing times).  Year 7, 8 and 9 students will start their Home Group at 9.00am and will have a six period day as per the current timetable and will finish the day at 3.00pm.   Year 10, 11 and 12 students will have a 1 period Mentor Program timetabled per week, instead of Home Group.

Period 3           11.10am – 11.55am
Period 4           11.55am – 12.40pm

There are many advantages of this new model and this type of timetable has been found to be extremely effective particularly in a school of our size. Students will receive their timetables next week and this will ensure a smooth transition to the Early Commencement Program which begins on Monday 26 November.
