As I walk around the Senior Campus, students are engaging in a wide range of learning activities both inside and outside of the classroom. For students in Middle School this is an important term of learning as we move towards our mid year exam period.
It was equally enjoyable to meet with parents, and particularly new parents at their first secondary school Parent Teacher Student Interviews at the start of the term. These discussions on student’s progress helps support their continued growth in all subject areas.
College Uniform for Winter
At Mount Waverley Secondary College we are a uniform school. As we move into the colder months our uniform requirements also change. All students should now be wearing the winter uniform including the college tie each day. Could I please ask for assistance in ensuring students are wearing the correct winter uniform.
ANZAC Day Ceremony
On Tuesday 24 April, the College community paid homage to our fallen war heroes with our College leaders reciting poems and traditional readings in a solemn and respectful manner at both campuses. The playing of the last Post and Rouse added further significance to the ceremonies. Thank you to all students and staff for their show of respect during these ceremonies.
Regular attendance at school is important for your child’s educational, social and emotional wellbeing. Students who regularly attend school find it easier to maintain relationships and remain engaged in their school community and are less exposed to ‘at risk’ behaviours. A commitment to attendance and punctuality is important in preparing students for roles and responsibilities in adult life. Some interesting facts:
- Being late to school 30minutes on a regular basis between Years 7-12 – is the equivalent of missing six months of learning
- Absences of 8-10 days per semester between Years 7-12 – is the equivalent of missing over 1 year of learning
Please ensure your child is only absent from school for legitimate reasons.
Mount Waverley Secondary College has now introducing SMS messaging to parents for absent students. Parents/Carers will receive a text message at 10.00am if your son/daughter has not been marked present that morning.
This SMS messaging system will allow the college to enhance and streamline the process of following up on student attendance in accordance the Department of Education and Training policy and procedures, and will enable timely delivery of information to parents and more accurate attendance for students at the college.
Parents/Carers need to ensure that we have up to date Mobile contact information to enable SMS messages to be sent. This information can be check in Compass and please contact the college if your details need to be updated.
Language Conventions and Writing: Tuesday 15 May, Periods 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Normal classes will be replaced by NAPLAN and rolls will be completed to accommodate Compass Updates. Can students please remember to bring a calculator for the Numeracy Test on Thursday.
